I know it doesn't help that we ran the Marine Corps, packed up our house, settled on a new house, moved into the new house, adjusted to a new neighborhood and a new commute to work all within 1 week of each other (jeez, just writing that makes me tired). Pretty sure right now I am feeling the after effects of a very busy few weeks. Every night after work I attempt to unpack at least 1 box, but I can't find the motivation and don't end up doing anything! Last night my mom and I went out to dinner and our plan was to come home and unpack so I could feel productive at least <i>one</i> night this week, but we ended up laying on my bed looking online for things I need to purchase for the new place and then I crawled into bed and called it a night. *sigh* I have to remember that the house will get unpacked........eventually. In the meantime, I can't get overwhelmed (although the boxes and clutteredness are <i>slowly </i>killing me).</span><br />

After googling 'post marathon exhaustion' I found a post on Runner's World from a girl who said she ran her first marathon and <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 20px;">after a couple of weeks of complete rest, she went to the gym and found she couldn't handle any more than 10 minutes of cardiovascular exercise. That is totally me right now</span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">! Lately I've been wondering why I've been so directionless when it comes to running and exercise - do I go out and do a short jog, do I run 4 miles, or do I listen to my body and just not run at all? Apparently according to this answer, the way I'm feeling seems to be completely normal (phew!) So basically, I deserve this rest and it's okay to be doing nothing after work (even if it means not unpacking and living out of boxes). Glad that is confirmed.</span></span><br />

Yes, why yes I do....I miss the accomplished feeling I had when I finished a 3, 4, or 6 mile run after work. Now it's cold and dark when I leave in the evening and I know I don't <i>have</i> to run, so I pretty much don't. I've been out 2x since the marathon and each time I ran less than 2 miles (lol). The other morning I decided to run early in the morning and check out our new neighborhood. Well after I went down a few streets and back, I decided that was enough. Just like that I headed back inside. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I remember after Brad ran his first marathon, he definitely had the blues. The first week after it was over and he wasn't supposed to run but rest...man was he grumpy! He finally told me just like post-wedding blues, there is also post-marathon blues. I certainly don't have the blues but I do miss feeling so in shape and feeling completely sore and knowing that it was a <i>good</i> sore. I always knew that when I trained for the marathon I'd have the bar set so high in terms of fitness and health and pretty much would never feel as good as I did for those 16 weeks. Well, that is certainly true....I'm starting to remind myself that I need to put a cookie back as I grab 4 out of the cabinet and remember...<i>I'm not running a million miles anymore!</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I really wish I had the motivation of my husband (for just about everything in life..) but when it comes to running, I wish I had the drive to go out there and run 10 miles just because. Instead, I always need something that is driving me, or an end goal in sight. I guess that's why I need to just sign up for another race here soon... <i>Did someone say something about catching the bug? (note: not another marathon! just a half or 10K...)</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Anyway, Brad and I have been busy this week unpacking our new home while trying to make it our own. It certainly is a process, and we've been living out of boxes and suitcases all week! I'm looking forward to putting it together and seeing the end result! So far we are really happy with the neighborhood, our new commutes to work (just about the same for me....an amazing 12-minutes for B!), and the new neighbors we've met so far! I feel so grateful to have found this neighborhood!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Finally, I found this little marathon thing that summarizes exactly how I felt the last 6.2 miles of marine corps....this couldn't be more accurate, as I often find myself reflecting back to those last 6 miles and despite the pain, I'm pretty sure I just zoned out entirely. Although when I crossed the finish line and could barely walk....I knew I had become too tough to let all of the pain stop me from the happiness and cloud 9 that I was floating on. :) I'll never forget that amazing day!</span><br />

Now that my training has concluded and my marathon is over, where do I go from here? Do I continue my blog and if so, what do I write about? Well, just because training is over doesn't mean I'm done with running. I look forward to writing more about running, health, and exercise in general; all things that are important to me. I also plan to sign up for future half marathons...and crossing my fingers I get into the lottery for the inaugural <a href="http://www.facebook.com/NWM26.2/app_328674533855007">Nike Women's Half Marathon</a> in DC on April 28, 2012 and am anxiously awaiting registration to open! I will definitely have posts that are related to half marathon training. Since running the marathon, I've been inspired to keep up my fitness and think signing up for more races will help me keep that goal. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I went out for my first post-marathon jog on Saturday morning. We are in the process of moving and I knew I'd be on my feet all day Saturday, but I had to get out there as it would be the last time I'd run on part of the Rock Creek trail that was essentially steps away from our house. I have so many memories on this trail - training for Cherry Blossom 10-milers, frustrations with back pain, many long runs most recently including our 16-miler for marathon training, long walks with Brad and our puppy, and just a lot of good times related to running and happiness. As I was wrapping up my ever-so-slow 2 mile run, an older man started casually talking to me about his hamstring injury and before you know it one thing led to another and we were both talking about our marathon experiences. Turns out he had run the MCM the past 2 years and we were so excited as we exchanged stories on our experiences.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">As I wrapped up my conversation and finished up my run for the last time on this part of the trail, I got nostalgic thinking about how much I'll miss it. Yes, where we moved has trails (more like bike trails), but there's something to be said about the Rock Creek Trail that takes you into the city as you're surrounded by other runners who are also training for a race, and sharing the same interests as you. </span><br />

Well, I think Brad & I generally have a lot going on in our lives...I often get asked <i>"Do you ever slow down?" </i> I've found that this blog has given me an outlet to share some of the happenings in our lives. I'm excited to share updates on our new house and stories as we begin this next chapter! I've been told by a few people that I've inspired them to get up and go for a run, or to sign up for a race, or just to be more exercise-conscious in general. I LOVE hearing that! I love that by spending just a few minutes every few days...I can actually inspire people to change something positively about themselves.</span><br />

I'm back to blogging after taking a few days off to soak in my post-marathon excitement! It's been 4 days since I finished my first marathon, the Marine Corps, and looking back on the experience I am filled with <i>accomplishment</i>, <i>happiness</i>, <i>confidence</i>, and <i>pure gratitude</i>. I've been thinking about how much detail I wanted to put into this marathon reflection post (because if you know me, you know I can often get caught up in EVERY single detail of every story....) but most importantly, I want to share some of the most unforgettable parts of running my first marathon that I think is worthwhile in telling. <i>I hope you enjoy this post and maybe even feel a bit inspired too.</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Let me start with Saturday night. Typing my blog post the night before the race, I was a complete MESS. My stomach was filled with butterflies, my heart was pounding out of my chest, my palms were sweaty, and I probably got 3 hours of sleep. The alarm went off at 4:15am and I was excited and ready for the day to start. Surprisingly, I must have slept away the nerves because the only emotion I felt when I awoke was pure excitement (combined with a little bit of anticipation). Brad and I woke up (Brad was clearly in race mode...he doesn't do much talking and is VERY focused when it comes to race mornings), so it was a quiet morning as we got ready, ate our oatmeal and banana, and made our way out the door by 5:30. We drove to Arlington and hopped on the metro to the Pentagon. First of all, I couldn't believe the energy and excitement on the metro at <i>SIX IN THE MORNING</i>....what started out as feeling completely exhausted turned into feeling completely pumped when I saw the entire metro filled with runners who were also about to run and do something <i>just as crazy as me.</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Unfortunately we got off the metro and had about a mile walk to the start. The whole time the only thing I was focusing on was the weather and whether or not it was going to rain. I was going to have family and friends cheering us on and the last thing I wanted was for them (and all the other spectators) to stand out in the wet and cold all day. As we arrived to the runner's area we did the normal pre-race routine....porter potties and bag check. Then we made our way to the starting line and it felt like what began as a <i>20-minute countdown </i>quickly turned into us <i>crossing the starting line.</i> I honestly don't know what was going on in my head as we started. I felt all sorts of emotions - but out of all of them, I think I was mostly in denial that what I had been training for for 16 weeks was <i>finally about to start. </i> I also kept telling myself that the only way to get myself through this race was to take it: one.mile.at.a.time (and thankfully this worked throughout the entire race). <i>You should never count down and think about how many miles are left.</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The first 5 miles just flew by. I was running at an 11:30 minute pace and felt GREAT. No knee pain and just basically floated through the first few miles, taking in all of the amazing energy and loving running next to Brad the whole time. Knew our first wave of spectators would be on M street in Georgetown, where I would see 2 friends from work and my dad. My dad ran the MCM in 2001 and has been a HUGE support system for me during this training. It meant so much for my dad to be there for me during the race and I could honestly <i>feel</i> how proud of me he was...<i>and that was enough to keep me motivated throughout the whole race.</i> We made our way through Georgetown at around Mile 9 and I turned to Brad and said, <i>"This is amazing...I truly feel like a celebrity." </i> The energy in Georgetown was my favorite. There were bands, people everywhere cheering on runners, and seeing my 2 work friends and my dad (our first spectators) was just so amazing. The next stop was at mile 10 where we would see my mom, Aunt Helen, and Brad's parents who came into town from Pittsburgh to watch the race. Just like in Georgetown, I made sure to stop and talk to everyone and give everyone a hug and say thank you for coming to watch us. I wasn't worried about my time and I wanted to be sure to thank everyone because it meant so much to have them there. At mile 11 were Christine and Jason, friends who drove to DC all the way from Baltimore. Christine has been such an amazing friend as she has supported me through the good and bad times of marathon training...it meant so much to have her and her husband there with huge smiles and awesome signs.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We entered Hains Point, <i>which every runner in DC knows for its awful reputation of being unscenic, quiet, very few spectators, and pretty much never-ending.</i> It was mile 13 in which I had a moment during the race that <i>I'll remember the rest of my life.</i> Brad and I were running behind an old man who was hunched over. Everyone was patting him on the back and telling him what a great job he was doing. On the back of his shirt read <i>Korean War, 1950.</i> It occurred to me that this man fought in the Korean War which would make him somewhere in his 70's right now. I started to think about how much this man has been through in his life and it was right in that moment that everything was put into perspective. Here is me, running 26 miles, and I think <i>I have it tough and that this is hard? </i> This man must have been through so much more than the majority of all of the runners on this course combined...and to think that at his age he would continue to challenge himself and run a marathon....<i>I was so inspired. </i></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i>My eyes filled up with tears. </i> I tried to get it together, until...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Ahead of me was roughly a quarter mile of Marines lined up in uniforms and holding American flags. Underneath each flag was a poster with a face of a fallen soldier; most likely these soliders were husbands, sons, brothers, friends, cousins, or someone related to a runner. Well that was all it took for me to completely lose it all together. I ran alongside these posters and looked at the faces of each of the fallen soldiers, and read one name after another. It was mile 13 and there I was, <i>balling my eyes out while running, and trying to hold it together </i>so other runners wouldn't think I had completely lost control of myself. But the truth was, I couldn't keep it together because at that moment I had never been <i>so moved</i> and felt <i>such a sense of patriotism and pride</i>. I looked at each solider who had died for our country and quietly said to myself, <i>"Thank you for all that you have done for us. God Bless You."</i> (I'm telling you...these emotions will stay with me forever...I have tears welling up in my eyes right now as I write this).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After I got through this emotional patch, the next thing that happened was all physical. My left upper quad started to cramp. I was able to ignore it or stop and stretch and have it feel at least a little bit better until mile 16. At 16 we saw our parents again and my awesome mom who also happens to be a Nurse. She spent about 3-4 minutes massaging the crap out of my quad and it felt better after that, so we were on our way. We hit mile 19 near the U.S. Capitol and the IT band/gluteal muscle completely spasmed out...completely out of my control....it was as if my left quad was convulsing and I didn't have the slightest idea of what to do about it because it hurt like a <i>bitch. </i>I told Brad he needed to massage it just like my mom did...and that worked for the time being. Once we started running again, it hurt, and it hurt a lot. There really is nothing left to say besides how hard the last 6 miles were. I know everyone says that mile 20-26 are all mental, and yes they were mental for me too, but I also had some excruciating leg pain to go along with it. <i>Turns out, after talking to other runners, I most likely subconsciously changed my gait (aka, my running form) due to my right knee injury and overcompensated by putting everything into my left leg. </i> However, this time I knew the difference between the pain I was feeling compared to the pain I felt when I injured my knee during the 20 miler. I knew this time it was a cramp and that I just had to run through it and <i>KEEP GOING</i> so I could finish.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">During the last 7 miles I was grateful to see so many more friends - my wonderful friend from work and her 5-year old son who ran with me for part of the race, 2 of my best friends Liz & Jenny who surprised me (I knew they were coming but had no idea which miler-marker they would be at!), and another one of my favorite work friends and her husband (who is also a runner) at mile 22.5. Then as we approached the finish I saw my mom, Liz & Jenny again, and my Dad, who was at the top of the hill right before I crossed the finish.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Honestly, I could keep typing all night...that is how unforgettable and amazing of an experience the Marine Corps was for me. Beating the bridge after mile 20 and mentally making it from 20-26 is something I never really want to remember <i>(yes, it was that bad).</i> But surprisingly, for as bad as those last 6 were and for as much pain as I felt because of the cramping the last half of the marathon, </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I hardly remember any of the bad stuff. </i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The stuff that I remember when I look back on running a marathon is: seeing my partner and my coach run beside me for 26 miles. </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">(Here come the tears again!) </i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> I mean honestly....Brad is a competitive runner. His best time is 3 hours and 28 minutes, and he spent 2+ extra hours running beside me and didn't leave my side once. </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">There was even one time when a Marine was yelling at him and saying, "Come on Brad! You can run faster than that!" (I know that probably killed him inside....) </i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But you know what...that didn't bother him. Would he have wanted to go faster, and did the photo ops and a million hugs that I was giving out to all of my spectators drive him crazy? Of course it did! But did he ever for one second, tell me to go faster or to stop enjoying myself and to take it more seriously? Not a chance. He wanted me to finish this race and for my first time marathon experience to be just as good as all of his marathon experiences. There were times when I told Brad that I just wanted to stop running or that my cramp was so painful that I needed to walk. He supported me </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">every single second of that race,</i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> and that is something that I will always remember. I am truly blessed to have run next to someone during my first marathon who happens to be my coach, my #1 supporter, my husband, and my </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">best friend for life. </i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I am so happy that Brad convinced me to sign up for this race and offered to run with me as an incentive. </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It worked. :)</i></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Also from my marathon experience, I believe that running one makes you a stronger person. When I was at mile 19 and my leg was spasming so bad and I <i>physically</i>, <i>emotionally</i> and <i>mentally</i> didn't feel like I could run anymore, I relied on the last thing I had to get me through -- <i>faith</i> and <i>prayer</i>. Honestly, I prayed, and I prayed hard. I asked God to give me strength to finish the race. And that He did. And for that, I am truly thankful. Why do I believe running a marathon makes you a stronger person? Because I believe that when you've depleted yourself of everything that you have left inside of you, that you <i>can still push through</i> and surprise yourself by <i>how strong you really are</i>. I kept telling myself that I would get through the pain and I would finish and get my medal. <i>My mind proved my body wrong.</i> If I was capable of pushing myself through that kind of pain and made it to the end, I think I've proven to myself that I have the ability to take on more challenges in life <i>than I am probably aware.</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">As I made my way up the last 0.2 miles (completely uphill), I crossed that finish line and I was wrapped in the arms of Brad. I cried...I cried because I was so relieved, in so much pain, and so happy to be finished. The great part of this story is on the MCM website, you can watch yourself cross the finish and sure enough, Brad and I were <i>LAUGHING</i> as we crossed the finish...I am so relieved to know how happy I must have been even though all I can remember is crying. <i> I guess you could say it was a combination of laughing and crying, all at the same time. </i> As we crossed the finish, we lined up to receive our medal from a Marine. <i>This is another moment from the MCM that I will never forget. </i> It was in this moment that I could barely walk, just wanted to lay on the ground and die, yet a Marine placed the medal around my neck, saluted ME for what I had just accomplished, and <i>I have never felt so proud.<br /></i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Brad's parents, my parents, my aunt, my best friends...everyone waited for me and Brad as we made our way to the family meet-up area...and I was greeted with so many hugs and received so much love. I limped around (got ice to calm down my leg spasms) and I hobbled around the city with the help of my friends who held me up the entire time. We celebrated with beer and pizza at a local restaurant and the night <i>could not have been more perfect. </i> I felt truly blessed for the love and support of so many friends who honestly couldn't have been happier for me and for Brad. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've spent the last 4 days since the MCM on a high...wondering when I'll sign up for my next race. I didn't know if this experience would be a one-time thing, knowing that I crossed it off my bucket list, or if I would catch the bug and want to do another. Personally there have been so many positive things that have come out of training for a marathon, and finishing one too. A marathon is so different than a half marathon - it requires so much more mental ability, focus, and determination. It requires 16 strict weeks (or more) of training. It requires strength - mentally and physically. Now that I can officially say that I'm a marathoner, I know I want to do another sometime in my life. I certainly do not want this experience to be my first and my last. <i> I want to experience all of this again one day.</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">This is it. </span></b> I am less than 12 hours away from lining up at the Marine Corps Marathon starting line and rocking this thing. Tonight I was sitting at dinner reflecting on how I can't believe the day is here. October 28th never actually felt like something that was realistic. Now it's the night before marathon day and I couldn't be more nervous. Something that I have trained 16 weeks for, a huge goal that I have been focused on since summer is here. I felt calm and excited all day...until an hour ago when it was 8:00 and I realized that in exactly 12 hours I'll be starting in on this adventure. I've got knots in my stomach, my heart is already beating out of my chest, but I'm trying to keep it all in perspective. I'm glad I got a solid 10 hours of sleep last night because I don't anticipate much happening tonight. I can't wait to see the 30,000 other runners who have trained for this and have been equally as focused on obtaining the same goal. I can't wait to be completely inspired and to run next to thousands of Marines. I can't wait to be on Cloud 9 from this entire experience and to cross the finish line right next to my Coach, my love...my husband. At this point, the weather can't stop the amazing energy that will be present on the MCM course tomorrow morning. There's nothing that a trash bag, shower cap and glide stick can't fix.</span><br />

Suz is a wonderful cook and made us an amazing carb-filled meal of chicken picatta over egg noodles, asapargus, and butter sage ravioli (and homemade apple crisp + ice cream for dessert).</span><br />

So tonight, while some of my friends are out partying for Halloween and there are a handful of other things I could be doing with my Saturday night and 5 hours of my Sunday morning tomorrow, I'm focusing on why I signed up for this race in the first place. Nothing will compare to the feeling of crossing that finish line tomorrow. I am ready to say that I personally challenged myself to finishing something as difficult as a marathon.</span></div>

I've always had a competitive spirit and I have never signed up for a race and not loved it. (well that's a lie....there was a 10K on Thanksgiving morning in 2009 that was 6 miles of hills and I went out wayyyyy too fast) but besides that I have always been on Cloud 9 after races. I need to keep telling myself that I GOT THIS. However right now, I feel like I'm going into something that is </span><b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">totally out of my comfort zone.</span></b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> <i>What if my knee starts hurting at mile 6 and I need to stop? I mean, really, to think that I will be running in Clarendon, Georgetown, throughout the monuments and finishing near Reagan National Airport is just crazy. I really have no idea how I'm gonna control my nerves on Sunday morning. It's 10:15 as I type this...which means I should be a little less than half way through the marathon 5 days from now. I always wondered how I would feel this close to the big day and now it's here. I'm feeling a combination of scared, excited, worried about my knee, and confident that adrenaline will get me through the race. I have found it to be pretty awesome that the first thing that most people who see me ask these days is how ready I am for the big day. After describing to them how much I am looking forward to Sunday I think it takes only about 30 seconds before others pick up on my out-of-control excitement (and nervousness, too). I can get carried away but I don't think that's a bad thing.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My in-laws are coming into town on Friday from Pittsburgh and it sounds like I will have a huge support system at the race - friends from work, college buddies, running friends, and my Dad who is flying home from FL to watch. I am so excited about this - I know I wouldn't be able to get through 26.2 without these amazing spectators. I need to figure out what I'm going to wear (weather depending) so I can tell everyone how to spot me. </span><br />

This week is all about focusing, eating a lot of protein and carbs (and apparently sugars are good for me too..SCORE!) and RESTING. There's nothing I can do from this point forward. I've taken a break from running, I've gotten a cortisone shot, and I'm giving it my <b>everything </b>to cross the finish line.</span><br />

If you happen to know my brother you probably know that this type of message is quite out of character for Nick for many reasons. Not because he doesn't care, but because he is the tough big brother. The one thing I know about Nick, when you need his support in life, he is the first person you can depend on. I don't think Nick could have hit the nail on the head any more than he did below. Thank you to my brother for supporting me. (ahh, wiping the tears now....) But really, I hope I feel like a winner on Sunday as I line up at the starting line. It's not about getting the medal at the end (or the new awesome upgraded recovery jacket). It's all about the amazing experience that it has been leading up to now.</span><br />

I've been trying to read your blog from time to time and I can say this: if you don't end up completing the race, I don't think it will be a wash. Part of the marathon training--a big part--is the experience leading up. And during that time you've pushed yourself, challenged yourself and already accomplished things you never thought possible this time last year. And you can take that confidence to the next race. Or the next big life goal. So race or no race...I am proud...and I am impressed!</span><br />

This time next Sunday (if all goes well with the knee) I will have already crossed the finish line and run my heart out. It was 4am this morning and I was wide awake...laid there for 2 hours and running was the only thing going through my mind (amongst a few other big things we have going on right now too...more on that later). Mentally I was ready to get out of bed and <b>do.this.race.</b> Had to remind myself I still have another week to go. :) Unfortunately the adrenaline was already pumping for two reasons - knowing that I'd wake up in exactly one week and be jumping out of my skin with excitement and also knowing that I was giving running another shot today after 2 weeks of rest.<br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Thankfully, I fell back asleep and as soon as I woke up I was ready to hit the trail. This 2 week hiatus has been too long. The orthopedist suggested I do 6 miles today as my training plan calls for 9. Considering I haven't run since the 20 miler, I didn't want to over do it and worsen the inflammation. At mile 2, the pain started and I was feeling beyond discouraged. (Pain was not nearly as bad as it has been been but still noticeable with a pinching feeling around my knee cap). I took it easy, slowed down my pace, and walked a little. Picked it back up and continued until I hit mi 6 and decided that was as far as I'd allow myself to run today. Mentally, I would have loved to do 10-12 today so I can go into the race next week confidently but I have to take it easy. (Finding a compromise between knowing what I <i>want</i> to do and what I <i>have</i> is quite challenging..)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It felt AMAZING to get back on my favorite Capital Crescent trail in Bethesda and to breathe in the fresh fall air. Even though it was a shorter run, as I was approaching mile 5 I felt like I was on top of the world all over again and got goosebumps just thinking about next week. Yes, it still scares me to think that I'll be running straight for at least 5 hours next week. However, there are certain things that I will and will not allow myself to think about when running long distance: how many miles are left or how much time I've been running vs. how much time is left. For me, the secret to getting through long runs is to break down the mileage into smaller increments - psychologically it's much easier that way so I don't psyche myself out. (For example after finishing 6 today I started thinking about how I will have to do 6 miles 4 more times during the race and then I scared the crap out of myself all over again). </span><br />

I know I've said this time and time again, but I can't believe my training is coming to an end and the countdown is at less than a week. I visited the orthopedic again this morning and asked for a cortisone shot. The pain hasn't gone away (it hasn't gotten worse which is great, but has remained the same level of uncomfortableness over the past week). I went into my appointment and the doc asked if I wanted additional oral anti-inflammatory drugs instead of the shot. The answer? No! Let's just cut to the chase, inject this knee, and get rid of this pain! Bottom line, I want this knee feeling better and close to 100% by next Sunday. Giving me more oral meds just won't do the trick with such a short time frame until race day. So the shot? Didn't hurt so bad. Apparently a common side effect is<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;"> discomfort after the injection and </span><i style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;">increased</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;"> pain 24 to 48 hours after being treated. This usually subsides quickly. Right now my knee feels no different than it did this morning prior to injection. Hopefully I don't say the same tomorrow or by the end of the weekend. My goal: To run 6-8 miles by Sunday. Sure hope I can do it.</span></span><br />

Now I'm approaching race day just shy of 2 weeks away. It's been an interesting experience not to run this past week. Since July, running has been my source of stress relief, time of reflection and rejuvenation and it's felt weird the last week to not run. All I want is to get out there and run to get the huge burst of energy that I do every time I think about doing this race! I am missing my runner's high.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I started realizing that the majority of my latests posts have been negative</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> - woe is me and "I can't believe I have this injury" <i>yada yada. </i>I need to change the way I've been thinking and need some positive energy back. At the gym this evening I started to change my perspective and started thinking about how far I have personally come in this training. What is meant to be will be and I need to start thinking about this whole experience more holistically and positively - without solely focusing on the outcome (which I have been doing lately). I want to do this race more than anything and I <u>know</u> I'm going to do it. But when I start to get mopey about possibly running some of the race in pain, or not going as fast as I would have hoped, or not finishing the training as strong as I would have wanted, I need to keep everything in perspective. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Running has given me so much confidence and has made me feel great about so many different aspects of my life. I've never had a fall season when work is the busiest and Brad and I are both busy with social activities and graduate classes, that I haven't been completely stressed out. This is the first fall where everything feels like it has just fallen into place and I'm able to get everything accomplished without the stress. This is hard to believe, as running was a HUGE thing to fit into an already busy schedule. Somehow, someway, running has made everything else manageable. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have so much gratitude for my wonderful husband...my coach. He has truly been my source of strength and motivation. When I've felt so discouraged the past few weeks about this injury and not being able to run, or when we ran 20 miles in the rain, or when I routinely put my alarm on sleep mode at least 3 times every long-run Sunday, it was him that pushed me. Without his encouragement and his ass-kicking every once in a while, I definitely wouldn't have made it this far. It has been such an incredible experience to take myself out of my comfort zone and to challenge myself to a new level all while having the guidance of someone who has been through this before. He understands what it is like to run a first marathon, to deal with a running injury, to cross that finish line, and to experience all of the emotions and accomplishments that are part of being a marathoner.</span><br />

I can't remember the last time I wasn't up early on a Sunday and out running at this hour. I decided not to join Brad on his run today. I attempted a short run on Friday after work and made it to the end of my street until my knee felt just like it did last Sunday after the 20 miles. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Not a good sign. </span> I decided REST is the best thing I can do right now so I'm able to run 26.2 in 2 weeks. So until the pain is 100% gone, no exercise for me. I'll have to get used to this.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Right now rest, 2 weeks before the big day, doesn't seem right. I hope it doesn't mess me up mentally. I've been "to the training plan" type of person leading up to this injury. I have to keep telling myself that if I was able to do 20 last week then hopefully 3 weeks later I'll still be able to do it (+6.2 more...). I hate being injured.</span><br />

Today I will miss the runner's high and the amazing feeling after a long run - the feeling that you can take on just about anything.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Some information he provided on this injury:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This is a very common injury for athletes, especially runners. Quadricep tendonitis is inflammation of the quadriceps tendon. The quadriceps tendon attaches the top of the kneecap (patella) to the quadriceps muscle in the front of the thigh. Inflammation occurs anywhere along the course of the tendon, although the bottom of the kneecap is the most common place for inflammation (where all of my pain is located). The pain is often worse just after waking in the morning or after sitting/inactivity for a prolonged period (yes, this is very true). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The good news? This isn't a serious injury. It's mostly just a huge amount of inflammation in my knee cap region and my knee basically saying "F&$ you" to me for running so much.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The doctor (being a marathoner himself) said he doesn't encourage marathon training plans that have you do several back-to-back long runs. He said he prefers the "ping-pong method" which has you do a long run (16) then the following weekend a shorter run (7) then the next weekend another long run (18), then back down again and so on. If I ever do another marathon, I will definitely try out this method instead as it seems like much less stress on your body (and your knees).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Does he think I have a chance at running the marathon in 3 weeks? YES!!!! Wahoooooo! Seriously, so relieved right now. The x-rays came back fine. Nothing major, just a common marathoner's injury.</span><br />

When I stop to actually think about finishing 20 miles, it's hard to fathom that I actually did this! I put aside the pain yesterday, celebrated with a beer and some awesome food afterwards, napped with a smile on my face, and then spent the rest of the evening and this morning with a swollen knee and in a lot of pain. This morning I can't bend my knee and and am walking with quite a limp.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Following our 18-miler last Sunday I noticed my right knee felt a little aggravated so naturally I did everything you're supposed to do when a new pain arises - ice, Advil, foam roller, cut back on running and cross training instead, and REST (okay, maybe I didn't do very much resting, but at least I tried...). Long run Sunday yesterday came along and the knee pain seemed to have subsided, so I decided it was time to get out and do our longest mileage yet - <b>20!!!</b> We got up the earliest we have ever gotten up to run and were hitting pavement by 6:45 (in the dark). It was calling for rain so we wanted to start early. About 2 miles in the rain started and didn't end until about mile 13. It was a very, very chilly and wet run. Around mile 4 I noticed a slight pinch in the knee but ultimately decided to ignore it. Around mile 10 the pain started getting more noticeable but was dull enough to keep going. By mile 16 I knew I should stop running but clearly my mind and my body were in an argument and ultimately my mind won. I really wanted to finish the 20 miles. Let's just say that by mile 19 I thought my knee cap was going to shatter. As I crossed the imaginary finish line at mile 20, I was unable to walk. Fortunately, there was a CVS nearby so the wonderful husband of mine quickly ran to get ice and a knee brace and from there I stumbled my way to the local Bethesda bar knowing that beer would at least alleviate some of the pain.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So today, I lay on my couch and feel so happy and accomplished about running 20 miles. If it hadn't been for the right knee pain, mentally I think I could have finished and run the entire 26.2. We took yesterday's long run on the easier side because of the pain and incorporated about five or six 3-minute walking breaks which definitely helped. I couldn't believe how easy this run was compared to 18 - it literally flew by! When I wasn't focused on the knee pain I was busy thinking about how what a difference one week makes in feeling more in shape. I never thought I'd be able to say that a 20-miler wasn't exceptionally difficult. Yes it was long, but it certainly wasn't my hardest run so far.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I head to an orthopedic dr. on Wednesday morning and until then I am praying that I haven't done anything detrimental enough to prevent me from doing this race. I'd be totally crushed after months and months of training to not finish this over such a stupid injury (I say stupid because I dealt with months and months of back pain and got through it, and if it's not going to be back pain that is preventing me from doing this, then I REALLY won't be happy). </span><br />

Just another testament to why I love this training so much. I know guilt shouldn't be what I'm feeling these days since I've accomplished so much already, but I still felt bad about missing a run. So...I set my alarm for 5:30, crawled out of bed and ran to the gym in the dark and in the misty rain. On the way there I chuckled inside and thought to myself, <i>wow...this will never happen again once training is over. </i> I am not usually a motivated morning runner, and...I've never in my life run to the gym before the sun was up. I ran 4 miles and felt like I was back on track.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My body however, is not on track. As I ran on the treadmill it literally felt like knife was cutting into my knee cap. It took....a really, really long time. My thoughts on 18 miles is that this is pretty legit....not only because 18 is a <i>really </i>far way to run, but the pain that my body is feeling is pretty legitimate too. How was I feeling when we started 18 miles? Nervous...I had a few butterflies...but then as we hit mile 4, I realized that mentally, I just wasn't into this long run. I had a headache from drinking one too many beers the day before at FedEx Stadium for the Virginia Tech game (and probably only had 4 total the entire afternoon/evening!) but clearly was dehydrated and overall felt really tired since I had been fighting off a cold for 10 days. Not a good way to start 18 miles. Brad & I also ran on a course that was new to me - starting at Shady Grove metro in Gaithersburg, MD, running to Lake Needwood (basically right near where I grew up), and then taking the Rock Creek trail from there to home in Kensington, and then 6 miles past home. <i>Yozzers - this was going to be <b>far</b>.</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The start of the run was a little rocky as we decided to hike through the woods to get to the head of the trail at Lake Needwood. I wasn't very thrilled with this idea of hiking up and down hills and going in and out of branches and trying not to twist my ankle to get to the trail. <i>Really Brad?? I kept thinking. </i> Basically, just did not want to run at this point. Thought about throwing in the towel. <i> Wouldn't it be nice to be laying on my couch with a cup of coffee right now, instead of doing this? </i> Knew I needed to mentally change my negativity and turn it into positive energy or I'd never make it. As soon as we hit the Rock Creek trail I was finally in my element and my bad mood changed <i>(thank God).</i> About 5 miles in, Brad's knees started hurting as they have doing lately when he slows down and runs at my speed. He picked up the pace and I was left to run by myself. This is actually something I've discovered over the past few long runs - I actually prefer running solo than running with other people. I've learned that during long runs I become very much an introvert - I don't think I prefer to talk and chat it up, but instead enjoy listening to my own body and thinking my own thoughts without having to worry about another person. My ideal long run is knowing that Brad is ahead of me so I'm not running entirely alone, but running at my own speed and being in my own little running bubble.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We got to our house at mile 12 and I knew a blister the size of about a quarter was developing on my right heel as my favorite pink running shoes are officially shot. If I stopped to walk or stretch, my heel would start throbbing so I decided to keep running. The long run involved very little walking. Brad decided to go back home to get the pup, so Myko ran the last 6 miles with us on the trail. I knew mentally I couldn't go home with Brad to get the dog or else I would never leave the house to finish the last 6. So, about those last 6........<i>so </i>mentally challenging. From mile 16-18 I'm not even sure I was a human. I kept running faster and faster because anytime I slowed down, every.single.inch.of.my.body.felt.absoltely.terrible. That being said, my body surprisingly kept going and going, but mentally I still am not sure how I'll be able to prepare for 8 more on race day. This training has been such a mental game.</span><br />

This time the pain is on the outer back part (near the heel) part of my foot, so I must have been underpronating, which basically is when impact forces are concentrated on the outer part of the foot. Ouch, it hurts just thinking about how painful it is right now. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">My knee is also in pain. I'm supposed to be running 5 again tonight after work, and think I'm going to pass on this run and let these aches and pains go away for another day.</span><br />

I'm sniffling and tired at work today and debating doing an easy 3, but I think more rest is what I need. I'm trying hard to do everything I can to get rid of this freakin' cold so I'm able to complete 18 miles this Sunday.</span><br />

If I need an immediate answer, I google it (I've also been referred to by friends as a google stalker. Ask me to look up anyone or anything and I can give you any information you need to know). So of course, what did I just look up? <i>Is running with a cold bad for you?</i> Of course answers on the internet are always biased and extreme one way or the other so, the answer? <b>Don't do it! </b>Anyway, while randomly researching other answers, I came across this article: "What Happens If I Don't eat enough Carbohydrates?" Well let me just tell you, this article made me laugh. I am a lover of all carbs and never thought I'd see a day where I needed to worry about not eating enough carbs -- I've always had the problem of eating too many! That being said, I've probably had about two different instances both happening on Tuesday mornings at work where I <i>clearly </i>didn't eat enough carbs/calories after a long run on Sunday and following the day after on Monday and my body felt it a few days later.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Yup. I experienced all of those things at work. I sat at my desk feeling terribly hungover and asked myself if I drank the night before. Nope. Hmmm...<i>then why do I feel like I've been hit by a bus? </i> It really was the same awful feeling after partying the night before and forcing yourself to go to work the next morning. There was one Monday that I had an event the day after a long run and I was on my feet all day and didn't have time to eat a complete meal, just snacking here and there. By Tuesday my body was dyyyyying. An egg and cheese everything bagel did the trick and from then on, I remembered to overload on carbs the day of and after a long run (clearly, a problem that would be easily fixed).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">2 - I've been following MCM on FB and they keep putting up race countdowns...I think by now we're in the 30 days left mark, which is hard to believe. They put up a FB status today that said there will be 12,000 first time marathoners running. This is really awesome, and I'm looking forward to running with other first timers!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">3 - We just got the new Mumford & Sons CD in the mail yesterday and I played it on my way to work this morning. It ROCKS. Mumford & Sons has been my saving grace through some long runs and they might be one of the only bands so far that can help me get a runners high. After our awesome 16 miler in Pittsburgh last weekend it was a short 3.5 day work week for us as we had another wedding (that Brad was in). We were on the road yet again on Thursday afternoon....headed back to Pittsburgh for weekend #2. Mid-week I started coming down with that dreadful feeling when you know a cold is coming on. By Thursday night as we were on the train headed to Pitt I could feel the sore throat and cold start to hit. Our initial long run plan was to wake up early on Friday morning for our 17-miler, rest during the day, head to our friend's rehearsal dinner that night and feel great the rest of the weekend knowing that our long run was out of the way. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Apparently from what I hear from other runners who train this long, a cold and a slight deviation from the training plan is pretty normal so I guess it's a good thing we are getting it out of the way now instead of a month from now, right?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We hit the local trail near Brad's parent's house on Friday morning, which was 3.2 miles up and back. We ran it 2 times and not only is the trail extremely hilly, but I had very low energy while running and knew I couldn't do much more. My body felt fatigued and mentally I didn't have it in me to run more. We left the trail and headed to Brad's nearby high school and did a few laps around the track before calling it quits. What was supposed to be 17 miles ended up being 7. The weekend is now over and as we approach a new week unfortunately I haven't turned the corner yet, still feeling rather crappy with a sore throat and cough and have inevitably passed it onto Brad. Knowing how much more hardcore he is than me, he will probably be back in the saddle sooner than me, but for now we're both feeling like shit.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've mentioned before but I hate missing runs. I know my body won't get out of shape by missing a few runs, but knowing that I've missed a long run makes me nervous...especially as I get so much closer to the big race day. I'm hoping by Tuesday I will start feeling 100% and can tie up my laces again soon. The last thing I want to do is get worse, so I'm going to rest until I'm close to feeling completely better.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">As a random side note, while I was on the train headed to Pittsburgh I was surrounded by other runners and bikers who were discussing races and training. I got into a discussion with a 30-something man who was giving me some first-time marathon tips. He was being very honest and was providing me with all kinds of feedback both positive and negative. He said after he ran his first marathon he couldn't walk for about a week. <i>{Awesome}.</i> He told me to pace myself. He said you can get easily pumped up at the start of the race and it's easy to go fast in the beginning with all of the spectators cheering you on. <i>Make sure to keep going slow, </i>I reminded myself. <i>That shouldn't be much of a problem, as I am training VERY slow as is! </i> He also said finishing the marathon was one of his biggest accomplishments and it can become very addicting. <i>We'll see about that... :)</i></span><br />

I realized over the past few weeks that I've been asked by a number of people why I am training for a race that is so torturous and why the heck I'd want to do something like this. My answer is that this is a personal goal and so far, through these 11 weeks of training, I've learned so much about myself.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">B and I had a wedding this weekend out of town. We knew we would have to incorporate a long run into our already jam-packed weekend. The weekend included a visit to Heinz Field to watch our Hokies play Pitt (and get disgustingly crushed), a wedding, and then of course, a long run. So where would we squeeze in this long run? There are a few factors that go into planning a long run when a wedding is involved. 1). Do we get up early on Saturday morning and run 16 miles <i>before </i>the wedding and be exhausted <i>at </i>the wedding or do we 2). Not drink a lot at the wedding but instead consume a lot of water and carbs, and wake up early the morning <i>after</i>? We opted for the latter. This means one glass of wine at dinner for this lady. What do I love the most about weddings besides the dancing, traditional cutting of the cake and dances, bridal party introductions and watching a newly married couple very much in love? I love <u>drinking </u>at weddings! Yes, I said it. Who doesn't love drinking at weddings??? So, there ya have it. I challenged myself not to have more than 1 drink at the wedding and did I do it? Yes! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But really, that's not really what this post is about because only having 1 glass of wine at the wedding wasn't difficult. Looking back on this busy weekend, what was really challenging was prioritizing and actually fitting in the run. We got home late from the wedding and I set my alarm for Sunday at 6:30 I've mentioned before that I am <b>not </b>a morning person, so getting out of bed this early for a long run is hard. By 7:00 I was dressed, ready to go, and eating breakfast with my husband and in-laws while we watched the sun rise. Once I was awake and in the mindset to run, it was a beautiful morning.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We ran 16-miles again yesterday and it was hard. I debated whether to run this weekend's long run because I've been having a lot of pain in the arch of my right foot. "Coach Brad" thinks it's normal and once you hit a high mileage such as 16, all sorts of new pain arises. However Sunday morning it hurt a lot (probably b/c of the dancing and standing at the wedding), and I didn't know if running was the best decision. We decided I would start the run and see how it felt. At about mile 4 it loosened up but by mile 12 it started cramping really bad again. <i>Do I stop, do I keep going?? </i>I didn't know what to do so I kept going. This morning I'm icing it and again, taking it one day at a time. The good news is that I finished the 16 miles.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Looking back, yesterday was another challenge that I accomplished. Every long run (although supposed to be enjoyable for most) is a huge challenge for me. I laugh thinking about how I used to be a 3-4 mile girl and that was the most I'd ever run. Sometimes I have moments where I take a step back and realize <i>holy sh*t</i> I am running 16 miles and this is freaking awesome!!!!! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So why am I doing this training? Do I think I'm crazy? For the most part, yes. Do I enjoy it? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Do I feel like a million bucks after a long run is done? YES! Is this entire training making me realize that I can do anything that I put my mind to? <b>Absolutely. </b></span><br />

September is my favorite month of the year for a lot of reasons which are all related to the awesome weather. It's the month that we reunite with football, Punkin Ale, good friends, and awesome running weather. I've always told Annie that when you start training for a fall marathon in July you won't believe how great it feels once you hit the road for a COOL long run in September. Battling 90+ degree heat & DC humidity will all be worth it when the weather breaks in September. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well this week we welcomed the fall weather with an early morning 16 mile run from Grovesnor metro to the Lincoln Memorial. The weather was a perfect 55 degrees and the sun was shining. We started off running a section of the Parks Half Marathon in Rock Creek Park bandit style (aka without a bib). This is the second year I've done this race bandit and it's a hoot. Competitive instincts kicked in and I started racing, running way too fast, as soon as we got on the course (leaving Annie behind). Eventually Annie let me go, opting to stick back at her comfortable long run pace while I got it out of my system. Smart move! </span></div>

Annie did a great job keeping a comfortable pace and we enjoyed the beautiful day on the way down. 16 miles this week felt easy compared to 14 miles in last week's heat. The best part for me was hearing Annie say for the first time, "wow I really think I can run a full 26.2!" The training is starting to pay off and I couldn't be more proud of her.</span></div>

Lucky for us the nice gentlemen from <insert random DC cab company here> gave us a freebie. We grabbed a gatorade and candybar for some post run fuel and then browsed the Dupont farmer's market before taking the metro home. </span></div>

I'm typing this post after a long day of work on a Saturday as we had an all day event for our students and have another event on Monday. It was an incredibly stressful week and when I thought about having to squeeze in running, it was another stressor added into the mix. After a long day of work, the normal person prefers to put his or her feet up, lay out the couch, and drink a glass of wine. But my outlet has had to be slightly tweaked...and now it is running (not exactly<i> always</i> #1 on my list of what to do after a stressful day...). Friday was the busiest day all week because I was wrapping up loose ends for the event on Monday and I had a 7-miler after work. Surprisingly, the run was awesome and I felt so amazing after it was over with a completely cleared head. (It kind of made me wish that prior to starting this training that has now forced me to run on Fridays that I had chosen to run every Friday after work to clear my head/separate a stressful week with a fresh start to the weekend!)</span></div>

I've also been very busy at work now that the students are back on campus and fall semester is officially in full swing. Marathon training + a very crazy work schedule + husband and I both in grad school should make for one busy fall.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The 14-miler. Wow. It took <u>forever.</u> Our entire morning was essentially running and the afternoon was all recovery. Whenever I finish a long run I always wonder how I'll actually be able to add on {insert extra mileage here} to complete 26 miles by the end of October. But the more I talk to people who have run marathons before, the more I realize I am gradually building up and adding more miles each week during my long runs than I thought I was capable. It's true though, as I <i>(barely) </i>finished 14, I reminded myself of what a big accomplishment it really was and how just 3 weeks prior I didn't think I was capable of much past 10 miles.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">14 miles is officially the longest I've run so far (as in ever, in my life...) :) The longest race I've done is a half marathon and the most I trained for that was 12 miles, so I'm 2 miles beyond what I thought was possible! Woo hoo! Anyway, back to the long Sunday run. Brad and I ran together and left our house and drove to the Grovesnor metro stop on the redline and left our car there. We hopped on the Rock Creek trail and ran all the way on the trail to Dupont. Our end reward was my 2 favorite things: beer and delicious pizza at Paradiso. After we left Paradiso (and I was happily buzzed after 1 beer...can you say super dehydrated?!) we metro'ed back to our car, I took a bubble bath, popped a muscle relaxer (for my back) and crawled into bed for the rest of the afternoon. A nice little Sunday with a day off of work the next day. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">All and all, the run went pretty well. It was mile 11-14 that seemed to last forever and particularly mile 13-14 that truly became a mental game as I was pretty confident my legs were going to give out from below me (likely the feeling I'll experience from 20-26???). As we approached mile 13 we had to climb (walk) up a hill to get onto the bridge that we ran into Dupont Circle. I literally couldn't walk as I attempted to make my way up this hill. If Brad weren't there pulling me up I probably would have just sat on the hill and watched the world pass by until my legs stopped throbbing. So, is this normal? I have no idea, but according to Brad's insight, <u>every</u> long run is difficult for <u>every</u> runner going through marathon training. I guess that makes me feel a little better. I hope it gets better and feels a little easier each week because 14 certainly wasn't easy. The great news is that today is only 3 days after running and I'm not sore at all. I'm pretty sure this is a positive sign!</span></div>

<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A few times throughout the run we would see a large group of 30 runners also training for the Marine Corps. Turns out they were part of the "First Time Marathon Beginners Run Club," and I told Brad that seeing people on the trail like that makes me feel so much more at ease and doesn't make me feel half as crazy when I know other people are sharing in the same experience.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">New craving post-run: As soon as we concluded the run there was only 1 thing I wanted and 1 thing that would make me feel energized. A regular coke. From a bottle, not a can, and not a fountain. Clearly the sugar was calling my name. The funny thing...I don't drink regular coke. I rarely drink soda. So it was a funny craving, as Gatorade or juice just wouldn't cut it. I chugged that bottle of coke so fast and in that moment there couldn't have been anything more amazing.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I bought a pack of these Keebler fudge stick cookies that you see in the picture below, as they were a favorite wafer cookie of mine growing up. My mom used to put them in the fridge (she still does), so I bought them at the store this weekend and stuck mine in the fridge too. I finished the whole pack of cookies in about 3 days (Brad does not have a sweet tooth...lucky him). The afternoon after the run while I was in bed, I heard Brad in the kitchen. I told him to bring me 5 cookies, and I ate all of them....and then I went back for more...and have had about 5-6 a day since then. They are like crack to me right now (especially chilled from in the fridge). My sweet tooth is out of control and I need to find a better way to help my carb cravings besides proceeded cookies and chocolate.</span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
